Steps to Expect If Doing an Appendoctomy
Appendectomy represents the surgery by which the inflamed or infected appendix is removed.
The first part of the colon, called cecum, is continued with a small tubular structure, the appendix. Appendicitis is usually caused by a small food waste or faeces that block the appendix causing its inflammation. Once infected, the appendix must be eliminated by surgical procedure, to prevent its rupture that might cause peritonitis or even death.
During the surgical procedure the patient is under general anaesthesia, so that he feels no pain. The appendix is removed through a small incision in the lower right abdomen or by laparoscopy.
In case of an abscess, or of perforation of the appendix, the abdomen is carefully cleaned, by means of drains which can eliminate pus or fluids.

Appendix removal is necessary in cases of acute appendicitis. Symptoms of acute appendicitis include:

- - Fever

For a more accurate examination, imaging studies may be used. It is well known that no test can tell for sure whether it is appendicitis or other condition, so the doctor will very much relay on the information given by the patient and on results of physical tests and exams. When the procedure is done, other abdominal organs are checked and the appendix is removed even if it has a normal structure and aspect to eliminate the possibility of an eventual problem.
Because acute appendicitis may be lethal, in case of the previous symptoms a person should call the doctor as soon as possible and not use medication that can make things worse or home treatment.
After surgery:
Unless the rupture or abscess complicated his situation, case in which antibiotics are required, a patient should recover very fast and with no consequences, after one to three day of convalescence in the hospital, followed by one to three weeks at home. The elimination of appendix won't harm one person's health.
